Eyelash Extensions vs. Latisse: Which One is Right for Me?

Updated: Apr 7, 2021

It’s no secret that thick, long, and full eyelashes are on-trend. Not only do they draw more attention to the eyes, but they often eliminate the need for mascara. Unfortunately, very few of us are actually born with this look. Luckily, there are a few different ways to achieve it! In today’s blog, we will discuss how to figure out which option is right for you.

Eyelash Extensions

How does it work? Natural or synthetic fibers are attached to the upper lash line using a medical-grade glue. The initial application usually takes 2-3 hours depending on the desired style and volume.

How much does it cost? Prices will vary depending on the style of extensions you have in mind, but according to celebrity lash technician Aarica Gardner, you can expect to pay about $150-$300 for a full set. Touch-ups, referred to as “fills”, are discounted, and typically take place every 2-4 weeks, depending on your preference. These touch ups are usually anywhere from $50-$150 and can take 1-2 hours, depending on your lash tech.

What are the benefits? Eyelash extensions are fully customizable: you can choose the length, shape of curl, and amount of volume. The results are also instant - there is no time spent waiting for results after application. High-quality extensions are also durable - you don’t have to worry about swimming, showering, exercising, or other activities, unlike press-on extensions or mascara. Plus, no doctor visit is needed. Like a hair or nail salon, anyone can make an appointment at their own discretion.

What are the downsides? Extensions require maintenance, and this is an obligation in terms of time, money, and effort. You will need to treat them with care, and go for regular fills every 2-6 weeks to maintain your desired look. You can’t wear mascara and need to use eye makeup carefully with your lash extensions.

Insider tip: When booking at a new salon, ask what type of adhesive they use! You will want to make sure they use butyl cyanoacrylate or octyl cyanoacrylate - if they can’t guarantee the glue is formaldehyde-free, don’t book!

Latisse®

How does it work? Latisse® is a serum that is applied to the lash line on a nightly basis. It was actually discovered by accident - it was originally used as a medication for glaucoma, but patients reported lash growth as a positive side effect!

How much does it cost? Latisse® is available in two sizes - 3 mL and 5 mL. The 3 mL bottle has a retail value of $135, and lasts for 70 applications (just under $2 per application). The 5 mL bottle retails for $175, and includes 140 applicators ($1.25 per application).

What are the benefits? Latisse® works to build your natural eyelash growth - studies have shown that Latisse® users see eyelashes that are 25% longer, 106% fuller, and 18% darker! Since the results are natural, you do not have to worry about maintenance or avoiding specific activities. The only upkeep required is spending a few seconds each night applying it to the lash line. If you ever decide to stop using it, the lashes slowly return to your natural length.

What are the downsides? It will typically take 8-16 weeks to begin to see results, so there is no instant difference with Latisse®. It can also cause darkening/discoloration of the eyelid, as well as the iris in users with a lighter eye color. Finally, some users experience itching or discomfort from Latisse®.

Insider tip: Latisse® is made by Allergan. If you are a part of their rewards program, Brilliant Distinctions, you can redeem points with your purchase!
